About 802.15.4 Wireless

802.15.4 Wireless Relay802.15.4 is not one of the most widely known wireless technologies but it is easy to setup and use, and vey reliable.  You will need a 802.15.4 modem that plugs into your USB port of your computer to talk any number of 802.15.4 relays with a standard range of 300' and up to 1 mile.  You can choose the distance of the module installed at checkout.!

802.15.4 Wireless Modules

802.15.4 wireless ModuleThis board is equipped with a 802.15.4 Module.  The 802.15.4 communications module adds wireless communications to the board.  The 802.15.4 module is powered from the board.  The board itself will require 12 volts of power and can be hard wired or you can purchase a "wall wart" type Power Supply at checkout.  Click the following link for a spec sheet on the XBeeŽ Multipoint RF Modules.

Line-Of-Site Operation

As with any wireless technologies, for optimal performance it needs to be line-of-sight.  In other words the antennas of the board and modem must "see" each other to get the optimal range or even be able to communicate at all.  Select the External Antenna option to provide better range especially when controller will be mounted in an enclosure or behind a wall or obstruction.

External Antenna Option

The External Antenna option is available with the 300' and 1-mile range modules and has a short pig tail that connects to a button on the 802.15.4 external module.  Extension cables can be purchased.  The connector type is RP-SMA (Reverse Polarity SMA).  You will need a cable with RP-SMA Male and RP-SMA Female connectors.  We do not stock these cables or recommend any specific cable.  Antenna extension cables will reduce signal strength and are generally not recommended over 20 feet, though individual results will vary.  Please note that the internal antenna modules (shown above) have antennas that are about an inch long and integrated into the module therefore the external antenna cannot be used on an internal antenna module or added after purchase.  Prices shown are with the 300' internal antenna option, external antenna options are available at checkout.  802.15.4 Modules

802.15.4 Wireless Modem

802.15.4 ModemPlug the XBP24-AUI-EXT_ZIGMO modem into the USB Port of your computer.  The modem will mount as a COM port on your PC.  Open the COM port and start sending data to the modem.  The modem will forward your data to all Wireless 802.15.4 compliant devices within range (it is also possible to speak to a specific device when other controllers are in range).  Mounting slots on the modem make it easy to attach to a wall to allow for line-of-site operation.  The modem is also available at checkout.  802.15.4 Modem

Sending Commands

Base Station Software is available at no charge to get you up and running fast (more on Base Station below).  Once powered up, the controller waits for a ProXR command.  A command consists of a few bytes of data in numerical format (see full Command Set) usually between 2 and 6 bytes.  Once the command has been received, the controller processes the command, and sends you back ASCII character code 85 to signal the completion of your command.

Induction Suppression

Induction CapacitorPerhaps the most overlooked aspect of relay control is proper handling of inductive loads. Inductive loads can best be defined as anything with a magnetic coil, such as a motor, solenoid, or a transformer.  Controlling a inductive load using this relay controller requires the use of induction suppression capacitors.  The purpose of this capacitor is to absorb the high voltages generated by inductive loads, blocking them from the contacts of the relay.  Without this capacitor, the lifespan of the relay will be greatly reduced.  Induction can be so severe that it electrically interferes with the microprocessor logic of our controllers, causing relay banks to shut themselves down unexpectedly.  In the case of Ethernet devices, customers may experience loss of communications until the device is reconnected.  Capacitors that we offer are available at checkout, for more information view our Induction Suppression Video.

SPDT Relay Controller

SPDT RelayThis device has SPDT relays installed.  SPDT Single Pole Double Throw Relays have three connections - Common, Normally Open, and Normally Closed.  When the relay is off, the common is connected to the normally closed connection of the relay.  When the relay coil is energized, the Common swings over to the Normally Open Connection of the Relay.  You can wire the device you are switching to either the Normally Open or the Normally Closed position.  For more information on selecting the correct relay amperage for your application see Choosing a Proper Amperage.

Easy Software Development

Most of our customers write their own program for controlling these devices and use almost any language to do this.  This boards supports the Serial Port Profile, meaning they will mount to the computer as a virtual com port making it very easy to send commands to the device.  This board will support almost any programming language you are comfortable with.

The ProXR Lite relays have a great feature where space is a premium - Break-A-Way Tabs. The Break-A-Way Tabs allow most boards to fit in an optional undrilled plastic enclosure.  Snap off the Break-A-Way Tabs and you have a controller with a smaller profile when you need to fit in a tight space.

Not Expandable

Unlike it's big brother, the ProXR Series, the ProXR Lite series controllers are NOT expandable. The firmware still thinks 256 relays are available but the relay portion of the controller only responds to the first 1, 2, 4 or 8 relays in Bank 1.

Read Analog Sensors

We did NOT skip the Analog Input portion of the ProXR Lite.  All ProXR Lite controllers offer a 8-Channel 8/10-Bit Analog to Digital Converter in addition to relay control.  Read and control from 8 sensors per board from 0 to 5 volts!  Look for more on this below.

Full ProXR Enhanced Firmware Installed

Analog to Digital Conversion

Analog Inputs are very special in that they are sensitive to voltage changes.  Analog to Digital (A/D) conversion is the process of converting a voltage in the range of 0 to 5VDC into a number that can be processed by custom software that you develop.  The ProXR Command Set will allow you to send a command to the board and read voltage levels from 0-5 volts using 8-bit resolution.  8-Bit resolution will read the voltage input (from 0 to 5VDC) and then is interpreted as a value from 0 to 255.  Zero being a contact closure input.

    For Example
  • A voltage input of 0 Volts is interpreted as a value of 0
  • A voltage input of 2.5 Volts is interpreted as a value of 127
  • A voltage input of 5 Volts is interpreted as a value of 255

So if you divide 5 Volts by 255 possible steps (0-255 for 8-Bit resolution), the board is sensitive to voltage changes as small as 0.019 Volts.  This controller has eight A/D inputs, each input is capable of reading a separate voltage from 0 to 5 VDC, provided all voltages can share a common ground.  This is particularly useful for reading temperature sensors (one temperature sensor is built into select boards mostly 4 & 8 channel, shared with analog input number 8).  A/D Inputs are also useful for reading light level sensors, thermocouples, switch closures, or just about any other kind of sensor you can think of.

N-Button Lite

N-Button creates widgets or buttons to control up to eight relays without any programming. A new button will be created and placed on the desktop of your computer for each relay that you want to control. N-Button supports Serial Port/ USB and Network connection between PC and relay board. N-Button Manager makes it easy to add any type of button to the desktop and change the properties.


Analog to Digital meters can also be added to your desktop to instantly read the status of any sensor or probe you may have connected to the board.  Each meter is customizable and can be changed without any programming knowledge.

Relay Button widgets turn on/off relay directly. It has never been so easy to control relays before.
Relay Status widgets show status of the relay automatically.
A/D Meter widgets display the value of A/D channel automatically.
Customized Button widgets can send user-defined data to relay board. It also supports to open or run other file and application.
